The annual sunburst race will hold their 42nd race on may 30th in South Bend. Proceeds directly benefit Beacon Children’s Hospital. In the race, you can choose to run a half marathon, 10K or 5K, or walk a 5K. People of all ages participate, from babies in strollers to runners over 50. Kids aged six years old and older can join the 5K or 10K, and kids aged 10 years old and older can do the half marathon. Kids aged five years old and younger get in free. For another year, IU South Bend is participating in the race to help raise money for the Beacon Children’s Hospital. IU pays employees to join the 5K Fitness Walk, and if an employee wants to do the 5K run, 10K run or half marathon, they get $45 off the cost. IU covers up to $45 for each faculty or staff member on the team. However, this discount is only available to cover the first 25 employees that register by May 8. Family and friends can join, but they will need to register on their own since IU does not cover their registration costs. Karrie Jean, assistant director of IU South Bend’s Honors Program, participated in the Sunburst Race last year. She said it should also be an opportunity for employees to walk and run together and build community. Jean said she loves that this race benefits an important cause and that our campus is willing to support that cause and offer this perk for employees. If anyone is interested in joining the team in the race, there is a direct link on Daily Titan without the code at go.iu.edu/8wVX. You can also contact Karrie Jean for any questions at [email protected].
