In a world filled with strife and conflict, it’s important to remember that there are good things to look for every day. Locally, nationally or internationally, big or small, there’s always something to celebrate.
This week, we are talking about the return of bison to our neighboring state, Illinois. The last reported sighting of wild bison in Illinois was in 1870. Bison were native to both Illinois and Indiana until they were killed by overhunting and habitat loss during the 19th century. This new conservation effort marks significance to ecological balance in Illinois. Furthermore, it’s important for learning and preserving the history of Native Americans in the Midwest.
The reintroduction of bison is just one of many conservation efforts that have been brought forth in recent years. As mentioned, this is not only important for conservation, but also for the history of Native Americans and recognition of their current population. These accomplishments were once thought to be impossible. This shows that with combined efforts, more can be done than we think. While some days feel rainy, we can always find a way to shine a light in our community.
